Dead Fish

August has been a catastrophic month for fish, or specifically the Menhaden fish.
Also referred to as the mossbunker, bunker, or pogey.

As the month began tens of thousands of dead fish began to wash up in Biloxi, Mississippi.
In regards to its close proximity to the oil spill in the Gulf many feared the worst.
It would be reported that there was no cause for alarm as this was attributed to a fisherman's broken pogey net.

One week later thousands more washed ashore in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.

Though this time around analysts would blame a lack of oxygen due to warm waters.

Enter the latest incident, coming only 2 days after the event in Massachusetts.
Tens of Thousands of additional fish have washed up on Jerseys shore.

Whether or not Pauly D's excessive amount of hair gel is to blame is debatable

as scientists remain baffled.
Many have noticed that seagulls neglect to even touch the belly-up corpses of a fish they normally feed upon.

The Menhaden play a major role in the marine ecosystem
more recently named the "most important fish in the sea" by cultural historian H. Bruce Franklin who links the fish to the national-and natural history of America.

At this point its obvious these 3 cases are connected, but whats at fault remains in question:
-the oil spill?
which evidence has shown to be crawling up the Atlantic shoreline as the oil & Corexit dispersant follow the Gulf stream north.

Pogeys filter food through their extremely sensitive gills which would indeed leave them vulnerable to any sort of pollutant in the water.

-or the reported decrease in the oceans phytoplankton?
Which are the number one food source for Menhaden.

Either way, it's obviously a sign that all is not content in our nations oceans
and I'm sure many additional incidents will follow, let's hope not!
