North Carolina sheriffs now want access to state computer records
to determine who's prescribed to what controlled substances.
According to the Department of Health & Human Services
30% of the residents were prescribed to at least one controlled substance within the first 6 months of the year, ranging from Ambien to Oxycontin.
Nearly 2.5 million people filled prescriptions for more than 375 million doses from a database containing 53.5 million prescriptions.
The database in question started collecting information in 2007,
but only 20% of the doctors and 10% of the pharmacies are registered to use it.
